GOD OF WAR Z: BLOODLUST IN SYRIA!

Kratos (Image Source)

There is blood everywhere, there is war somewhere – peace has forever been an elusive existence, only dropping by on the eve of destruction. There is too much being shed on the global scene and children are growing never having known a semblance of serenity.

When you come up against the God of War you should know that resistance is futile, just as dry cloth first resists water but inevitably succumbs to the rain, Ares assuredly comes to claim his victory.

Il y a du sang partout!

The Ghost of Sparta killed his wife&daughter and then sought revenge on his master, Ares, the erstwhile god of war for deceiving him to commit the murder. Kratos exerted his revenge with a hand from Athena and another from the troubles in the Box of Pandora, to became the God of War! The Ghost of Sparta’s was an existence of revenge and seeking freedom: from his Ascension to the Chains of Olympus, from Betrayal to his Rise as The Warrior, blood followed Kratos and not even the cities of Attica were spared.
God of raW: Bashar Al-Assad?

The Syrian civil war has been described by sources including Aljazeera as “the deadliest conflict the 21st century has witnessed so far”. Resentment driven by “lack of Freedom”, economic strife and outrage from the “crackdown” on Syrians bringing the Arab Spring through the Southern City of Deraa are reportedly the blades that slit the first wrists. The bloodshed rages, six years on and Russia, America, Turkey, Iraq, Iran and Saudi Arabia have turned Syria into a proxy battlefield. These members of the international community, amongst others, have had a hand in death of “more than 465,000 Syrians” and in making “over 12 million Syrians” homeless in their own home.

Peace talks and Geneva conventions have crashed and burnt while “one of the largest exoduses”, according to BBC, in the modern era unfolds. From Aleppo and Deir Az Zor to Damascus, the situation in Syria is sad and disgraceful. Let us forget who is to blame but remember that two wrongs do not make a right and three certainly make no sense.

About half of Syria’s refugees are children, “2.4 million”, and so my wonder is who or what the Sunni and Shia Alawite are fighting for. Tomorrow should always to be for the children and the time for this aging generation to live the high life is gone. The goal of the day should be a better tomorrow, for the children of today to live in peace and for us, when we are weak and frail, that there may be the calm and resources for our care.

Elements of tomorrow are in the air, but you need to understand the chemistry. Reports have it that the ‘chemical weapons’ red line has been crossed, this has now truly gone beyond mortal warfare.

HUNGER GAMES – IYA BASIRA IS SERVING

So the other day I was in the kitchen cooking - boiling water - and then guess what happened. A fly appeared! You don't know how much I detest pesky flies when I'm boiling water. First, Le Mouche (French for The Fly) and I had a stare down like in an old American Western and next came the high flying Jet Li manoeuvres; full scale forward back-flips, Chinese bending, Liu Kang dragon shadow kicks, Chinese get-up, afternoon tiger strike, another move named after China, morning peacock assault, omo see fight! At the end of the battle, the fly was victorious and I was shamefully defeated but just as Monsieur Le Mouche turned his back to celebrate, I struck a low blow; I swatted! Muhahaha-ha! Don’t judge me, it was a fight to the finish so it had to be done. Now that I have mentioned kitchen, cooking, fighting fly and boiling water, my stomach has been tickled and so I might as well talk about food.

There is nothing like osikapa ne ku anwulu, smoking hot rice, or amala to gbono feli feli, savagely hot amala, that has been placed on a plate before you and you know you are about to do justice, "Mine, mine, all mine!...my precciooousss!" Good food really is one of the greatest reasons to be alive and even Smeagol, aka Gollum from The Lord of The Rings loved to eat fresh fish every now and again; nwanne ifukwa point and kill. So what do rice and amala have in common, what makes them so special, what makes nothing else quite like amala or rice? Quite simple, they are both food for the masses, national saviours from starvation. Rice here stands for cereal, not cornflakes, and grain while amala stands for all swallowables: eba, starch, fufu, samovita, wheat, pounded yam and you know the rest. Whenever you see men lined up at Iya Basira’s shop and anwulu ne ku n’ebe ni ne, there is steam everywhere, then you know owo o ti wole o! dem done get alart! God win!

Are you hungry, when last did you eat? But first of all, go down low! (Lol, sorry bad joke). [Now really] First of all, let me clearly state that hunger is not a game nor is it a joke. Who is playing with you? Someone is hungry and then you will be calling hunger game, e be like say you don dey mad abi. This title is not a play sometin, we are not here to smy with anybori; Hunger games?! People are starving and oyibo are using hunger as games, omo see rough play. To add pepper to pepper soup, they now called the Hunger Games Part II 'Mocking Jay', ahh *sheds one tear* they don’t know Mockingjay is bush meat here. Wadannan fari mutane za su kasha wani! Oyibo go kee pesin o!

When I finally started writing this week’s piece, I decided that I would write about the hunger of the masses in Nigeria, hunger in Africa but I really didn't know what I was getting into. The moment the actual staggering depths of suffering and starvation hit me was when I opened google images; I could not stop real tears from filling my eyes. The pictures of human beings looking more like simple skeletons covered in thin films of skin and children with distended abdomens brought first of all, real tears and then heaviness to my heart but in a flash anger took over. Anger because those who are deliberately leaving thousands and millions to starve to death are jejely sleeping with two loaves of bread under their pillows. We will talk about these evil men another day. For today, let me give you a better perspective of the real Hunger Games, no sci-fi.

The United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization (UN FAO) estimates that in 2010, 925 million people were hungry. That is approximately a billion people and about 15% of the world’s total population, fifteen percent! Of this gastric (ghastly) number, Asia and the Pacific take the cake with 578 million while sub-Saharan African is chewing the cord in second with 239 million but weighing in pound for pound, sub-Sahara is the main chef with 30% of its population being simply hungry while Asia and the Pacific with their plenty plenty people is at 16%.

The causes of this magnitude of woe and misery include poverty, conflict, terrible economic decisions, negative environment and population growth. They are more often than not intertwined but intertwined or not the end result is the same; misery and despair. Kevin Carter was a South African photojournalist who received the prestigious Pulitzer Prize for his photograph that aptly captured the 1994 famine in Sudan. He immortalized a once in a life time image of a fat and healthy vulture patiently waiting for a sickly and starving child on the verge of death to become its next meal. He was told not to touch the child for fear of transmitting infection to the child. Kevin Carter committed suicide three months after winning his career defining prize and these are his last words as written by his hand:

“ I’m really, really sorry. The pain of life overrides the joy to the point that joy does not exist…depressed…without phone…money for rent…money for child support…money for debts…money!!!...I am haunted by the vivid memories of killings and corpses and anger and pain...of starving or wounded children, of trigger-happy madmen, often police, of killer executioners….I have gone to join Ken if I am that lucky ”
Who was Ken? Honestly, I have no idea and I did not seek to find out. What caught my attention, however, was the fact that vultures have now added freshly starved Homo Sapiens to their menu and even the world’s greatest prize for photography could not keep the dreadful images from hunting Kevin Carter. Mr Carter happened as far back as 1994, it makes me wonder how many children that vulture and his friends have had between their meals since then.

Today, for the first time since I can remember, I could not finish a whole loaf of bread. I was shocked to say the least then considered that it must be the effect of the unsettling information and images I have recently acquired, yes I eat a loaf of bread on my own. Most times I take good food and clean water for granted because like most of you who can afford to read this, I am fortunate to have three square meals every day but after seeing what I have seen, I doubt I can ever forget to be grateful. Beyond my selfish gratitude it is more clear to me now that the number of people, children dying from starvation even if it is just 1 is 1 too many. We as a race, as a species need to get our act together and at least resolve the poverty, conflict, economics and population growth that we can control and then fight tooth and nail against the environment.

An International Non-Governmental Organisation, Save the Children says: “In Africa, hunger is a constant, chronic pain gnawing away at hungry children. Starving children in Africa can, and should, become a thing of the past. We must put an end to starvation in Africa and we can’t do it without you. The good news is, Save the Children has many proven ways to help stop hunger in Africa...”

Some 3 idiots - the Indian Movie - once said “All Is Well” and if idiots can see hope then why can’t I? We must all join the fight to save the children and not just the children but also the youth and the adults that have been forced to face the torment of starvation and sleeping on empty and growling stomaches.

Anyhow sha, I have said my piece, "Sistah Iya Basira abeg gimme flied lice and cully", Ogbeni don’t come near my food o, my love no dey reach that side o, because I was asking you if you were hungry before? If na play stop am nw o, don't be a fly, lol. I will end this piece with a Hausa song I seemed to have picked up at some joint a while ago, it is simply a song asking for some bread from heaven:

Abinci alheri shine zamunci
Abinci alheri Eh, abin ci rai shir ye-ye
Daga wurin adah on
Abina al-he-ri zamunci!

GREAT ASSASSINS, HIGHEST KILLERS

Hitman (Image Source)

What does it take to be a professional, a great assassin; the highest amongst killers? Does it take a stellar body count or is it the finesse with which the work is done? - The age old quantity versus quality dilemma. Whenever the word ‘assassin’ is mentioned or as Nigerians prefer ‘hired killer’, even the most inept English speakers know that merchants of death are prowling round in the developing conversation, ready to eliminate any target at a moment’s notice - you go fear killer. Throughout history, there have been many men renowned for the art, no, gifted in the science of spilling red juice just as effectively as children take apart blocks of Lego - you go fear talent. At this point I must warn that this piece is not for the faint of heart and so if you are squeamish, I must advice you to turn back now, go and read The After School SpecialThe Bogey Man’s Town or any other older piece.

[Back to the story] We will always remember the ‘greats’ like Britain’s Jack the Reaper aka Whitechapel’s 1888 Surgeon of Death who went after prostitutes, slashing throats and surgically removing internal organs; our very own Clifford Orji the Cannibal who roasted and ate fresh human flesh caught live at Oshodi Underbridge, Lagos - our own na only stomach infrastructure, ode - and America’s Richard Kuklinski aka The Iceman, a mob contract killer famous for freezing his victims to mask the time of their deaths, real cold!

Human beings are really high up on the killing chain, constantly inventing new ways and techniques to put an end to noisy neighbours, friends or for the professionals, clients’ problems. Richard ‘The Iceman’ kuklinski alone is speculated to have handled the demise of between 100 and 250 people from 1948 to 1986 for the DeCavalante Family; he was only one man, think of what others have been doing. To establish once and for all the identity of the true ‘highest’, one of the world’s leading billionaires turned philanthropist, Bill Gates, released new details on the biggest butchers - it seems Mr Microsoft is also a fan of hired killers - and guess who is standing tall at number one. Nope, it's not man *drum roll please* it is mosquitoes!

Forget that their name comes from Spanish, sounds sexy and literarily means ‘little fly’, these ferocious insects are the biggest and baddest boys (and girls) and have reportedly claimed about 50% of every human life that has ever existed or so they say. Let me put things in better perspective for you. Sharks take out 10 lucky people for seafood every year, lions take another 100, crocodiles score ten times higher than the king of the jungle with 1000 and our best friends, dogs are positioned at number four with 25,000 hits. The top three as you can imagine are in another class of their own with snakes slithering an average of 50,000, man killing 475,000 of his own for sport or whatever his excuses - thank goodness I'm a Revolutionary from Mars - and mosquitoes *prostrates* taking the cake with a whopping 500,000 (estimate of 584,000 in 2013 alone) deaths each year! Igwe!!!

Mosquito (Image)

The top killers carry the plasmodium parasite - Anopheles species only, Culex and Aedes do their own thing - which they transmit through bites between dusk and dawn, you go fear timetable. There are several species of plasmodium but plasmodium falciparum is the most deadly to people usually resulting in....Fatality! Majority of cases of this disease are in Sub-Saharan Africa but it is a problem in 109 out of the total 196 independent nations of the world, 45 of which are African. Our continent accounts for 85% of global malaria cases and 90% of deaths worldwide; 85% of these are children below the age of 5. If you think snakes are bad because a black mamba bite kills in 15 minutes then think again: every 60 seconds a child dies from malaria, or so they claim. This tropical disease causes avoidable and catastrophic spending even more so in countries like Nigeria, where the National Health Insurance Scheme, NHIS, isn’t the greatest (Malaria kills 300,000 children annually in Nigeria).

Mal-aria, a word of Italian origin meaning ‘bad air’, is such a serious issue that fighting it is now a Millennium Development Goal (MDG); bad air costs an estimated $12 billion in year to year productivity. Treated nets, insecticides and Artemisinin-based combination therapy are helping to make the battle a bit fair but only education on environment and significant development can truly win the war; as things stand, there are still an estimated 207 million cases of plasmodium infestation each year.

[Funny story] Despite the ferocity of these wild creatures, it is reassuring to know that music still soothes the savage beast. I noticed the other night while I was gallantly strumming my guitar in the Spanish flamenco style, as a bad guy that you know I am, a hoard of mosquitoes appeared before me and started dancing - aswear! Maybe they understand Spanish. I tried to take a picture but as soon as I stopped playing, they all flew away, true story! No mind me jare, I just borrow pesin guitar pose small, lol.

[Back to Assassins and Killer Malaria] There is probably nothing worse than a mosquito perching around your ears at night when you are trying to fall asleep, malaria probably is but that’s not the point at the moment. It makes me feel like pulling out a magnum and ending the discussion right there and then! *thug mode activated*. If you read last week’s piece then you will remember that I now shower late at night because of mosquito attacks but I have, however, realised the silver lining to this fluttery dark cloud. If mosquitoes bite you and you eventually get malaria, bruh, you go sleep like landlord! Seriously, however, I wish we could be free from these top class assassins just as Ireland is free from snakes so that we can dare to sleep under the moolight and stop losing all these lives.

Assassin's Creed (Image Source)

[P.S.] I just thought it would interest you to know that there is such a thing as an Assassin bug; 10,000 deaths per annum with Chagas disease and also the Asian tiger mosquito; chikungunya virus and dengue fever, nasty stuff.

Shout out to the Rebel CJ (@shadowreaver_), he's my go to guy on all affairs thug and mob, in fact, this piece had to receive his blessings before it was released, he is a Godfather. His right hand man, is a bad guys as well....Shakez Baba (this one na hitman o, he dey rap dey sing; he has this crazy Diamond Bank advert and all his stuff man, way too deep!).
